Editorial by Elias V. Messinas
Welcome to Kol haKEHIILA! Our efforts continue not only to expand the services we offer to our readers and web site visitors, but to improve the quality of the Kol haKEHILA newsletter as well. You may have noticed the new format of the new hardcopy issue, which offers a better photographic and text resolution. We hope that your continuing support will also allow us to increase the size of the newsletter in the very near future. We open with the most important event since our last issue: the WMF listing of the Kahal Shalom of Rhodes in the World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites. In this issue Yona Gal of Yad Vashem is uncovering the story of Yehuda Cohen, an artist from Salonika, who perished at Auschwitz. The Jewish Community of Thessaloniki is organizing its second conference on Judeo-Espaniol in April, and is planning the opening of its new Jewish Museum. We are presenting the rejuvenating effort which is developing among the youth of Greece, called "Tradition". The new Holocaust monument in Athens is steering controversy. Kol haKEHILA is planning a new web site for the European Day of Jewish Culture, for which we are urgently seeking donors. Rachel Levy reports on robberies of treasures from European synagogues. Kol haKEHILA is organizing the KEHILA Jewish Heritage Tour to Greece in August 25 - September 3, 2000. Deadline for participation is April 30th. We thank our correspondents and friends, who keep us informed from Greece and abroad, and have helped us with this issue, especially Prof. Carol Krinsky, Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos, Rafael Frezis, Leon Saltiel, and Nina Hatzi. We welcome and thank our new subscribers for joining and supporting Kol haKEHILA. Finally, Kol haKEHILA editor is preparing to participate in the conference on the preservation of the Jewish monuments of Greece organized by the Central Board of Jewish Communities of Greece in Volos on March 17-19, 2000. We will report on the conference proceedings in our next issue. |
