SYNAGOGUE OF RHODES - Kal Shalom

Historical Data:  This historic synagogue is the only to have survived World War II, even though it is the oldest 
synagogue on the island of Rhodes.  It was built in 1575 and restored after World War II.  
Area/Capacity:   315 sq. m./ 400 persons  
Actual Condition:  The synagogue needs important restoration works and it is included in the World Monuments Fund grants program for the year 2000 as one of the 100 most endangered sites.  The synagogue is maintained by the small Jewish Community of Rhodes.  
Necessary Restoration Works:  
Estimated Cost:   70 million drs. ($200,000 US)

CEMETERY OF RHODES
Destroyed tombs in the cemetery of Rhodes
Historical Data:  The Jewish Cemetery of Rhodes contains characteristic tombstones of cultural importance.  
Area/Capacity:   15,000 sq. m.  
Actual Condition:  It is guarded and surrounded by a wall.  It is in relatively good condition thanks to contributions 
made by Jews living abroad originating from Rhodes.  
Necessary Restoration Works:  Conservation and preservation works have recently taken place, but the project is not completed due to lack of funds.  
Estimated Cost:   8 million drs. ($23,000 US)
