IANNIOTIKI SYNAGOGUE OF ATHENS  
Historical Data:  This is the oldest synagogue in Athens.  It was built in 1906 and is currently used only during the 
High Holidays.  
Area/Capacity:   300 sq. m./400 persons  
Actual Condition:  The synagogue is maintained by the Jewish Community of Athens.  The recent earthquake of 
September 1999 caused serious damage, mainly to the roof of the building.  
Necessary Restoration Works:  The supportive structure of the roof needs immediate intervention.  The building 
must be restored in order to maintain its typical romaniote character.  
Estimated Cost:   100 million drs. ($286,000 US)

BETH SHALOM SYNAGOGUE OF ATHENS  
Historical Data:  The Beth Shalom Synagogue was built in the late 1930s and was renovated in 1975.  It is the main synagogue of Athens.  
Area/Capacity:   400 sq. m./550 persons  
Actual Condition:  The synagogue is maintained by the Jewish Community of Athens.  The recent earthquake of 
September 1999 caused some damage to the building.  
Necessary Restoration Works:  Restoration of the earthquake damages and renovation of the building.  
Estimated Cost:   70 million drs. ($200,000 US) 

CEMETERY OF ATHENS I 
Part of the old Jewish Cemetery in Athens

Historical Data:  The oldest Jewish cemetery of the community occupies a part of the first Christian cemetery of 
Athens.  The graves of this cemetery date back to the early 20th century.  Since World War II, the cemetery is no 
longer in use because it is full.  
Area/Capacity:   2,500 sq. m.  
Actual Condition:  The cemetery is surrounded by a wall and is totally protected.  
Necessary Restoration Works:  Conservation of old tombstones and preservation of the whole area.  
Estimated Cost:   15 million drs. ($43,000 US) 


CEMETERY OF ATHENS II 
The Holocaust Memorial inside the Jewish Cemetery of Athens
 
Historical Data:  The second Jewish cemetery in Athens occupies a part of the third Christian cemetery in Nikaia (an area outside Athens).  Its use started just after the War when the Municipality of Athens gave this area to the Jewish community.  The cemetery is at present used by the Athens Jewish Community.  
Area/Capacity:   20,000 sq. m.  
Actual Condition:  It is protected by a wurrounding wall and it is guarded.  The recent earthquake caused serious 
damages to the small building situated inside the cemetery used for burial services.  Restoration works are needed.  
Necessary Restoration Works:  Restoration works are needed on the small building situated inside the cemetery and also general preservation works for the whole area, and for the oldest of the tombstones.  
Estimated Cost:   3 million drs. ($9,000 US)
