In February 2001, Kol haKEHILA and the Hellenic Society Paideia joined forces towards a common goal: the preservation of the memory of the Jews of Veroia, and the preservation of the memory of their Christian neighbors who hid and saved them. The goal is the creation of an exhibition inside the renovated synagogue. The exhibition will not only commemorate the Jewish community of Veroia, an ancient community to which St. Paul the Apostle preached in the 1st century AD, but will commemorate the heroic intervention of the Christian population of Veroia, who hid and saved Jews despite the danger. The exhibition will be a monument to tolerance and co-existence, where in the city of Veroia, Jews, Christians and Muslims lived together for centuries. Lectures on the Jews of Veroia took place in Boca Raton, FL, Mobile, AL, and Providence, MA, bringing together Jews and Christians of Greek origin from all over the state. This symbolic gatherings were a reflection of the strong ties between the Jewish and Christian populations in Veroia before the Second World War, when 460 Jews lived in the city. Today only one family lives in the city. Most Jews were annihilated during the Holocaust. The survivors emigrated to other cities, the United States and Israel.
