Θεσσαλονίκη, 28 Ιουνίου 2000 (14:36 UTC+2) - received from L. Saltiel

Θεσσαλονίκη, 13 Ιουνίου 2000 (17:02 UTC+2) - received from L. Saltiel

ΤΑ ΝΕΑ , 08-05-2000 - received from L. Saltiel

Memorial held for Greek Holocaust victims
received from L. Saltiel - 8.5.00

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) - Government officials and leaders of this northern city's once-thriving Jewish community attended a Holocaust memorial service Sunday, less than two weeks after Jewish sites here were attacked by vandals.
The service was held in memory of Greek Jews killed in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. More that 90 percent of the 80,000-strong Jewish community, centered in Thessaloniki, perished.
"We honor victims of the Nazis in Thessaloniki ... and hope mankind will follow a course of peace and harmonious coexistence," said Defense Minister Akis Tsochadzopoulos.
Thessaloniki police have promised to step up security at Jewish sites after   vandals painted swastikas and Nazi slogans at the city's synagogue and   Holocaust memorial in an April 24 attack.

GREECE CONDEMNS NEO-NAZI VANDALS
(dpa) - 26.4.00 - received from L. Saltiel
Athens (dpa) - The Greek Foreign Ministry on Wednesday condemned the vandalism of a synagogue and Holocaust memorial in Thessaloniki on April 20.
The Greek authorities were looking for the culprits in order to administer "exemplary punishment'', the ministry said.
Vandals believed to belong to the neo-fascist Golden Dawn organisation painted swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans and poured red paint on the synagogue and memorial on April 20.
The attack occurred on the day of the Passover festival and the eve of the anniversary of the Greek military coup in 1967.
The memorial commemorates the roughly 50,000 Greek Jews who were depoted by Nazi soldiers in 1943 to German concentration camps.
"We condemn in the most categorial terms the vandalisation of the memorial for the Jewish Holocaust and the Synagogue in Thessaloniki, apparently by neo-Nazi elements'', Foreign Ministry spokesman Thanassis Beglitis said.
"The disrespect which was shown to the holy places and symbols of the Jewish community in Greece is a brutal insult to the historical memory of Thessaloniki'', he said.
The Holocaust memorial was set up by the Greek state three years ago "to honour the Greek Jews, the victims of Nazism'', Beglitis said. "The authorities are looking into the issue to discover the culprits and carry out their exemplary punishment.''

WHY THE TURKISH FLAG WAS SET ON FIRE IN ATHENS  - (INAF) - 24.4.00
from the Federation of Turkish American Associations - received by L. Saltiel

News in the Greek press say that in the early hours of 21st April unknown people wrote slogans such as “we are going to destroy you” and drew swastikas on the walls of the Synagogue and the “Jewish Genocide Museum” in Salonica.  This incident has provoked the reaction of the Jews living in Greece.
Following to this anti-Semitic action in Salonica, a group of Greeks carrying  the  amblem of “Hrisi Avgi”, a racists’ organisation, later on during the same day, gathered in front of the Intercontinental Hotel, where a group of Turkish businessmen stayed, and ripped down the Turkish flag from its pole at the entrance of the hotel and set it on fire.Despite the attempts to convince that the incident is of no importance and that it shouldn’t be taken seriously, it is considered to be a very serious situation.  The activists are members of an organization which, in the coming years, will carry destructive activities against Turkey.
“Hrisi Avgi (Golden Dawn)” is an organization founded by Neo Nazi Greeks.  The organization, in the past 2 years, has been involved in some 60 activities. The members of “Hrisi Avgi” wear around their necks crosses with the relief of  crucified Jesus and claim they are pure “Hellens” or “Orthodox Christians”.  Where ever they go they repeat the same thing; that they are enemies of the Turks and Jews and that they will continue to struggle against those who are not Hellens and Orthodox Christians in order to achieve “Greater Greece” .
Last October, a member of “Hrisi Avgi”, Pantelis Kazakos,  in the heart of Athens, attempted to kill seven people whom he thought were Turks, with a pistol.  He killed one and injured the rest.  In his statement to the police he admitted that he shot them because he hates Turks and Muslims.
“Hrisi Avgi” has a quite interesting formation.  It meets at the “Thessaloniki Officers Union” club.  It cooperates with organizations such as “Royalists Union”, “The Junta Officers”, “Neo fascists”, “National Alliance” and “Greek Front”.  It is claimed that it has a connection with the Greek New Democracy Party.
Political observers in Athens say that political parties and party members such as Haralambidis, Admiral Naksakis, Neoklis Sarris and ex-president of the Greek Intelligence Service Savas Kalenderidis, and some other similar PKK supporters are getting prepared to side with “Hrisi Avgi”.

GRAVE ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS IN SALONICA
MET WITH WIDESPREAD INDIFFERENCE
PRESS RELEASE 22/4/2000
Greek Helsinki Monitor and Minority Rights Group- Greece denounce the anti-Semitic attacks on unprotected Jewish minuments in Salonica in the night of 20 to 21 April 2000. They also regret the widespread indifference with which they were met in Greece, another example of the prevailing phenomenon of "tolerance of intolerance" in that country. Finally, they call on Greek authorities to investigate the incidents and place 24-hour protection of these monuments.
Swastikas and anti-Semitic slogans were written on the Holocaust Monument (at the juncture of Papanastasiou St. and Nea Egnatia Avenue) and a Synagogue of Salonica (of the "Monastiriotes" on Syggrou St.) in the night of 20 to 21 April 2000, at a time coinciding with Jewish Passover and the 33rd anniversary of the 21 April 1967 military coup. The signs were "signed" by Chrysi Avghi, a well-known neo-nazi organization.
More condemnable than these actions is the fact that today only one newspaper ("Kathimerini") reported the incident with a very short news article (another, "Vima" reported only a Nazi attack against a synagogue in ... Erfurt, Germany). While there was absolutely no reaction from the government or any political party. Quite unlike what happens when Greek Orthodox sacred places are desecrated, for example, in Istanbul.
The President of the Jewish Community of Salonica Andreas Sefiha, in an emotional statement (available in Greek at www.mpa.gr/article.html?doc_id=110235) spoke of a "revival of fascism and nazism 55 years after the end of the Second World War." He then mentioned that "its heirs entered government in Austria. Only yesterday, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr. Rau came to us, saw us, but went on without feeling a duty to honor the memory of the victims of Nazism. Today, two unprotected sacred places of ours are desecrated, certainly because some people here, following these incidents, believe they are justified to think the
road is open to them. (...) Is Nazism knocking on our door again? Is it gaining ground as a result of the acquiescence and the insufficient alert of our conscience?"

The Controversial Role of Rabbi Koretz in the Deportation of Salonikan Jewry
by Yitzchak Kerem, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece - 12.4.00

In recent years, some new documentation has pointed to the role of Rabbi Koretz in trying to prevent deportation and harm to the Salonikan Jewish community, while other documents point to him ignoring rescue appealsand efforts. Many Salonikan Holocaust survivors still blame him as being a collaborator and his involvement in some anti-Jewish measures outside of Salonika raise several critical questions. Despite negative oral historical accounts, none of whom have ever been backed up by written sources, the archival material found in recent years exonerates Salonikan Chief Rabbi and late Holocaust-period  Jewish Community President Dr. Zvi Koretz from criminal collaboration with the occupying Nazi regime. Recently uncovered Italian Foreign Ministry documents show that Rabbi Koretz was in touch with Salonikan Italian consul Zamboni and his staff about rescuing Jews. In order to avoid deportation to Poland, Koretz proposed to the German authorities exiling Salonikan Jewry to an uninhabited Greek island. In the beginning of April 1943, after the deportations had been in full swing for several weeks, he begged the Greek-Orthodox Metropolit Gennadios to arrange a meeting with Greek puppet Prime Minister Rhallis in order to try to prevent further deportations. Unfortunately, Rhallis was baffled and had no tangible response or course of action, and Koretz was ousted the next day as community president and rabbi by the Nazi commanders Dieter Wisliceny and Alois Bruner, and detained in the Baron Hirsch transit camp until his deportation to Bergen Belsen on August 1943. Earlier in private discussions with Wisliceny, he had agreed to supply him money in exchange for token rescue measures. The Czech Jewish ³Working Committee² had been negotiating with Wisliceny in accordance with their plan to rescue one million Jews in Europe; which included Greece. Koretz was unaware of the framework, and Wisliceny not only tricked Koretz, but he exploited the Czech committee for their money; but 24,000 Jews from Central Europe  were saved by this action.
Koretz believed he was helping the local Salonikan Jewish community, but his stubborn erudite personality served as a block in communication when community members or outside forces turned to him for help or proposed rescue options. On at least two occasions, Koretz rejected attempts by ELAS-EAM to save Salonican Jews and send them to the partisans in mountains. The local public gentile committee set up in Salonika to try to rescue Jews received deaf ears on occasions when its members proposed rescue activities to Koretz.
Koretz died in Trebitz some 5 weeks after the liberation from typhus. After the war, he was put on trial posthumously by the Jewish community, but based on the Judeo-Spanish testimony of community executive committee member Solomon Ouziel he was exonerated from any guilt or penal activity.
Many survivors voiced negative accounts of Koretz as a Nazi collaborator. In their published memoirs, Jacky Handeli accuses Koretz of organizing Jewish youth to collect addresses of the Jewish community and give out Jewish stars, and orders for ghettoization. Jack Strumza overheard phone conversations where Koretz discussed deportations. While he was mistaken in creating the Jewish Police Force, whose heads ended up being collaborators, war criminals, rapists, extortionists, and murderers, Koretz naively believed that this was a measure to maintain order during a tough period. On the other hand, Koretz did inform by phone the Jewish communities of Florina and Veria to report for deportation, but he was relaying German orders and his name does not appear on documentation.
On various occasions, Koretz tried to calm down angry Jewish crowds about their fears for deportation. He perceived himself as handling the constant German demands, intimidation, and terror as best as he could and in the interests of the Jewish community. As community president, he succeeded to ransom the thousands of Jewish young men from forced labor, but since he, the local Jews and others in Athens could not raise the immense sum, the Germans ordered the destruction of the Jewish cemetery in December 1942. In the end, Koretz was
also deceived by the Germans; just as were most of the Salonikan Jews. The Jews were not sent for labor in Crackow, but to Auschwitz. Despite being deported to Bergen Belsen with the other prominent Jews, he had to work hard, suffered greatly until the liberation, and eventually died shortly afterward.

Jews deplore Rau's failure to visit memorial Say verbal apology wouldn't be enough
by Stavros Tzimas, Kathimerini, Greece - 6.4.00

THESSALONIKI - The city's Jewish community has protested against the failure of German  President Johannes Rau to lay a wreath at the Holocaust memorial, which commemorates the  country's 50,000 Jews who died in Nazi concentration camps.

"Laying even one flower at the Holocaust monument was the least he could have done in honor of our dead, but the German president did not do that," community president Andreas Sefiha  told Kathimerini.
"A verbal apology would not have been enough," added Sefiha, "But Rau... should have felt the burden of history and found time to pay his respects at the memorial.
"History's lesson has not been learnt. The phenomenon could be repeated," he said.

The German president avoided any reference to the annihilation of the city's centuries-old Jewish community by the Nazis, even during a wide-ranging discussion with pupils at the city's German school. The Supreme Court is currently deliberating on a claim by the Jewish community for 3.5 billion drachmas from the German state for money paid as ransom to free Jews doing forced labor during the Nazi occupation.
Rau visited the town of Kalavryta in the Peloponnese on Tuesday, the site of the massacre of 1,463 people in 1943, and became the first German president to apologize for Nazi atrocities in Greece.

The Effect of the 1923 Greek-Orthodox - Turkish-Muslim Population Transfer
on the Jews of Thessaloniki
by Yitzchak Kerem, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece

For most of 450 years since the 1492 Spanish expulsion, the Jews comprised either a majority or plurality of the total population of the city of Salonika (Thessaloniki). With the arrival of the Greek-Orthodox Asia Minor refugees to Salonika, the demography of the city changed and the Jews lost their stature and majority status.
The Greek-Orthodox refugees brought to Salonika a deep-rooted anti-Semitic tradition which had been pronounced in more than fifty blood libels in Asia Minor in the 19th century and mainly in the latter half of that century. With the advent of mid-19th century industrialization in Salonika, the Jewish industrialists of the city relied primarily on Greek-Orthodox labor and enjoyed cordial relations with them, except for an occasional outbreak of Greek-Orthodox religious fanaticism, or criminal action.
Soon after the Greek-Orthodox arrived in Salonika in ca. 1923, there began a movement amongst their ranks to antagonize the large local Jewish population and delineate its stature. The 100,000 Greek-Orthodox refugees not only outnumbered the dwindling Jewish population of ca. 56,000, but they began to initiate legislation against the latter. In the Salonikan municipal council, a law was intentionally passed to harm Jewish economic life by prohibiting work on Sunday; thus forcing the Jews to either break the Sabbath or lose a day's pay.
Toward the end of the 1920s, the Salonikan Greek-language daily Makedonia incited against the local Jewish population and in particular against the Jewish Maccabi youth sports movement. In June 1931, Makedonia falsely accused Maccabi member Isaac Cohen of going to Bulgaria for a Macedonian nationalist conference, when in actuality he went to Bulgaria for a regional Maccabi meeting at a different date. The false insinuation led to rioting by the EEE (National Union of Greece) and Asian Minor refugees against Jews throughout the city. The mobs burned down the Campbell neighborhood of Jewish refugees from the famous 1917 fire and in the aftermath 15,000-18,000 Salonikan Jews moved to Eretz-Israel and another 15,000 moved to France during the years 1932-1938. In the Greek parliament, Greek President Venizelos also falsely blamed the Maccabi movement and Isaac Cohen of conspiring against Greece. In the 1932 Veria trial, the Greek-Orthodox anti-Semitic inciters were acquitted. The court blamed the newspaper Makedonia for being responsible for inciting the riots, but the rioters were acquitted on the premise that their actions were in the spirit of patriotism and their homeland was endangered.
