Dr. Messinas is the Editor of Kol haKEHILA, the NEWSLETTER OF THE JEWISH MONUMENTS OF GREECE, and Adjunct lecturer at the Technion, Haifa, Israel. Expert in the history and architecture of the JEWS OF GREECE and the GREEK SYNAGOGUES, and project architect of the historic preservation of the 19th century synagogue of Veroia, northern Greece.

Lecture: "RESTORING GLORY: THE PRESERVATION OF SEPHARDIC HERITAGE SITES AROUND THE WORLD" by ISJM President and architectural historian Dr. Samuel Gruber will lecture at the Center for Jewish History New York. The lecture is sponsored by the American Sephardi Federation (ASF), one of the five member orgniazations in the new center. 
Dr. Gruber's illustrated lecture will discuss the enormous strides taken over the past decade to identify, protect and preserve the great monuments of Sephardi and Mizrahi heritage around the world. Gruber will present the work of the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad on behalf of the cemetery, and the work of others such as the World Monuments Fund and the International Survey of Jewish Monuments on behalf of endangered Sephardi sites throughout the world. 

Gruber is the author of "Synagogues" (Metrobooks, NY, 1999) and many other publications about synagogues and historic Jewish sites. The lecture is free to the public, but seating is limited.

Congratulations to the American Friends of Greek Jewry (AFGJ) for the initiative to honor the Righteous of Nations who saved Greek Jews during the Second World War. Special prizes will be offered at the ceremony. The honored Righetous are:
Vassilis Persidis, Vassiliou family, Thadou family, Frederick Soueref, Georgios Karatzas, and Vassilis Rakopoulos. Special prizes will be offered to the Greek Resistance Groups of EAM/ELAS and EDES. The ceremony took place on August 9, 2000, at the Bestwestern Coral Hotel, Athens, Greece.
