Terra Hebraica " Rhodes, un pan de
notre mémoire " " Rhodes,
a slice of our memory " by Moise Rahmani. (ISBN
2-87895-060-1, FF 145.-)
The work of Moise Rahmani on the
Jewish history of Rhodos is fascinating in
more than one aspect. It recalls
its faithfulness, its wealth as much as
its suffering. The reader who is
interested in the admirable fate of
sephardic Judaism will find here
a large sample of thought.
Elie Wiesel
A happy island like a jewel case
deposited on the Aegean Sea... this is
where the very ancient Jewish Community
of Rhodos has been living for
centuries. Moises Rahmani makes
us discover its history, its daily life,
its traditions, its language, in
short all the things that transformed life
into " a miracle of perfume made
of roses, cinnamon and honey... "
In July 1944, Ulrich Kleeman,
commanding officer of the 999th division of
the forces of the Wehrmacht in
the Isles situated East of the Aegean Sea
has the Jews of the island arrested
and crowds them together in boats. On
August 4th the people of Rhodos,
disimbarked in Athens are locked in
cattle trucks. They arrive in Auschwitz
on August 16th 1944. One thousand
five hundred amongst them are immediately
gased...
In the name of memory, Moise Rahmani
revives this lost paradise. He
invites you to close your eyes
and, without any big effort, you cross time
and space. The sun of the Mediterranean
penetrates by streams and
rekindles both your soul and your
heart. You are surrounded and mothered
wormly. Look at los muestros, ours,
their simplicity, their generosity.
Their heart is huge ! "
With " Rhodes, un pan de notre
mémoire ", Moise Rahmani is laying a small
stone on the grave of those who
have none.
The author was born in Cairo,
descending partly from a Rhodos family who
emigrated to Egypt at the end of
the nineteenth century ; he grew up in ex
Belgian Congo in a Rodesli environment.
Thus , he was quite naturally
inclined towards the so attaching
history of this community. This work is
enriched by an exceptionnal collection
of photographic testimony.
