Bourlas, Moissis Michael "Greek, Jewish
and Leftist" (Ellinas, evraioos kai aristeros) Nisides Editions ISBN
960-8480-74-4. By Samuel Hassid (10.8.00)
The man was born in Cairo, but at a young age his family returned
to Greece, first to the macedonian city of Naoussa and then to Salonika.
He was involved in covert activities and participated in the resistance.
He was jailed during the greek civil war and was liberated after the
creation of Israel, under an agreement between the israekli and greek
governments. In 1968 he left for the ex-USSR with his russian-jewish
wife but had to return to Greece after the fall of the Soviet Union,
where he had difficulties having his greek citizenship recognized (it
was finally recognized in 1999). Currently in the Saul Modiano Old Age
Home of the Salonika community of Greece. Interesting acciount of a
generation who gave a lot for an ideal that came out to be illusory.
